Colorado notary training online, built for SOS vendor approval
Colorado notaries train before every new commission and every renewal, and the Secretary of State credits only courses from an approved vendor, an approved course provider or the SOS itself. An approved course is live classroom or webcast. We build the webcast platform on your site so identity, presence and the sealed certificate are handled before the application goes in.
What SOS requires of an online course
Colorado Secretary of State (SOS). Summarized from the rule text, with the citation for each so you can check it yourself.
- 01
Live classroom or webcast
8 CCR 1505-11, Rules 1.1 and 1.2
An approved course of instruction is a live classroom or webcast course approved by the Secretary of State, and an approved vendor is one the SOS approved to provide it for a fee.
- 02
Credit only from approved trainers
8 CCR 1505-11, Rules 2.1.3 through 2.1.5
New applicants complete training and pass the SOS exam no more than 90 days before applying, and renewing notaries the same before renewing. The SOS grants credit only for courses from an approved vendor, an approved course provider or the SOS.
- 03
Identity, presence and the right person certified
8 CCR 1505-11, Rule 3.1.2(a) and (b)
The vendor application includes procedures to establish the identity of each attendee and ensure they are present for the required time, and procedures to ensure the person receiving the certificate is the person who completed the course.
- 04
Curriculum approved first
8 CCR 1505-11, Rule 3.2.1
The SOS approves the curriculum before you offer the course. It covers the Colorado Revised Uniform Law on Notarial Acts, from physical presence and blank documents through journals, identification of signers and official misconduct, plus best practices including notarizations for the elderly.
- 05
Seal of accreditation, four years
8 CCR 1505-11, Rules 3.2.2 and 3.3.3(e)
An approved vendor receives a seal of accreditation within 60 days, displays it on all attendee materials and on the certificate, and must reapply with curriculum, materials, form and fee before it expires four years after issuance.
- 06
Certificates valid 90 days, no partial credit
8 CCR 1505-11, Rule 3.3
No certificate goes to an attendee absent during any substantive part of the course. It names the vendor, the graduate and the completion date, and states that it is valid for 90 days from the date of issuance.
- 07
Attendee lists on request
8 CCR 1505-11, Rules 3.2.3 and 3.6.1
Vendors keep and provide on request each instructor, the date, time and location, whether proof of completion issued, and each attendee name with the type of photo ID used. Written requests from the SOS are answered within 20 business days.

Live classroom or webcast

Does your current setup do this?
How the platform is built to it
Your course, on your site, under your name. Every requirement above is a feature, not a promise in the application.
Webcast sessions with attendance built in
Your live sessions stream inside the course with a roster that records join, leave and check-in responses per attendee, so absence from a substantive part is visible and blocks the certificate.
Photo ID check tied to the certificate
Attendees verify a government photo ID at registration and again in session, and the certificate issues only to that verified account, the same-person procedure in Rule 3.1.2(b).
Curriculum map for the NVENDOR form
Each required topic is a tagged segment, so the platform prints the slide or time mark for every item on the application curriculum table.
Sealed 90-day certificates
Certificates carry your seal of accreditation and the exact Rule 3.3.3(d) statement, and show the 90-day expiry so graduates know when to file.
Reviewer login and records on demand
We set up the online course URL, user name and password the application asks for, and attendee lists export in the Rule 3.2.3 fields for any SOS request.
The path to SOS approval
- 1
Complete the Notary Training Approved Vendor Application, including the online course URL, user name and password.
- 2
Attach all handouts, workbooks and tests, the identity and presence procedures, and the same-person certificate procedure, and mark where each curriculum topic appears.
- 3
Submit it with the $250 application fee. Cure any deficiency within 30 days of the notice, or the application is considered rejected.
- 4
Receive the seal of accreditation within 60 days of approval and put it on all attendee materials.
- 5
Get revisions approved before offering them, and reapply before the seal expires four years after issuance.
The terms
We are building one right now for a state-approved online school in Virginia, in English and Spanish, on the same terms.
- One flat fee
- Quoted per course before any work starts. No hourly billing and no surprise line items.
- Final payment on approval
- The last payment is due when the regulator approves the course, so the platform has to pass review before it is paid for in full.
- No per-student fees
- You keep what every enrollment pays. Nothing is skimmed per seat, per certificate or per month of traffic.
- You own it
- The platform, the code and the student records are yours outright, on your site and under your brand.
Questions schools ask
Can Colorado notary training be done online?
Rule 1.1 defines an approved course as a live classroom or webcast course approved by the SOS. We build the webcast version with attendance and identity checks inside it.
How long is a Colorado training certificate valid?
Ninety days from issuance under Rule 3.3.2, which lines up with the rule that training and the exam happen no more than 90 days before applying.
What does the vendor application cost?
The current NVENDOR form lists a $250 application fee. Accreditation lasts four years from the seal, then you reapply.
Can the SOS sit in on my course?
Yes. Rule 3.6.2 lets the SOS or its designee attend any approved course without notice and at no charge to observe, monitor, audit and investigate.
What does the build cost and who owns it?
One flat fee per course, final payment when the SOS approves it, no per-student fees, and you own the platform and code outright. We are building one right now for a state-approved online school in Virginia, in English and Spanish, on the same terms.
