Florida CNA training with an online classroom, built to 64B9-15

Florida Board of Nursing rules name online training programs directly and hold them to the same standards as every CNA program: 80 classroom hours, 40 clinical hours with 20 in a licensed nursing home, and a 70% floor on every theory exam. Clinical stays in person under the direct supervision of the program instructor. We build the online classroom and the clinical record on your site, so the application and each renewal describe a program that really runs that way.

What Board of Nursing requires of an online course

Florida Board of Nursing. Summarized from the rule text, with the citation for each so you can check it yourself.

  1. 01

Online programs are covered by the same rule

    Rule 64B9-15.005(1), F.A.C.

Each training program, including online training programs, has a governing body with authority to run it, set general policy and assure adequate financial support, plus reviewed policies on attendance, grading and progression, records, fees, student rights and grievances.

  2. 02

80 classroom hours and 40 clinical

    Rule 64B9-15.006(2), F.A.C.

The standardized curriculum requires at least 80 hours of classroom and 40 hours of clinical instruction, and at least 20 of the clinical hours are long term care instruction in a licensed nursing home.

  3. 03

16 classroom hours before resident contact

    Rule 64B9-15.006(3), F.A.C.

Before any direct contact with a resident, students complete at least 16 classroom hours in communication and interpersonal skills, infection control, safety and emergency procedures including the Heimlich maneuver, resident independence and resident rights.

  4. 04

70% on theory, a pass on every skill

    Rule 64B9-15.005(3)(b), F.A.C.

Instructors require a grade of 70% or greater on all theoretical examinations and a passing grade on all skills evaluations, and provide direct supervision in the classroom and in clinical experiences.

  5. 05

Supervised clinical at 1 to 15

    Rules 64B9-15.005(4)(c) and 64B9-15.006(4), F.A.C.

Clinical experience is provided under the direct supervision of the program instructor, with a minimum instructor to student ratio of 1 to 15 for students caring directly for residents or clients.

  6. 06

    Completion papers within 10 days

    Rule 64B9-15.005(2)(c)9., F.A.C., and Form DH-MQA 1256

The program coordinator gives each student documentation of program completion within 10 days. The certificate carries the program name and information only, the total program hours and the director signature.

  7. 07

A pass rate the Board watches

    Rule 64B9-15.005(6), F.A.C.

Graduates must pass the CNA exam at a rate not less than 10% below the state average. Twelve months below that standard brings Board review and probation, and approval is rescinded if the rate does not recover within a year.

Question 1 of 7

Rule 64B9-15.005(1), F.A.C.

Online programs are covered by the same rule

Each training program, including online training programs, has a governing body with authority to run it, set general policy and assure adequate financial support, plus reviewed policies on attendance, grading and progression, records, fees, student rights and grievances.

Does your current setup do this?

How the platform is built to it

Your course, on your site, under your name. Every requirement above is a feature, not a promise in the application.

Live, instructor-led online classroom

The rule asks instructors for direct supervision in the classroom, so the online classroom is built around live sessions with the instructor present, not unattended video. Attendance is taken per session and feeds your attendance policy.

Theory exams scored against 70%

Exams draw from your question bank and score against the 70% floor in 64B9-15.005(3)(b). Every attempt is stored on the student record, and progression follows the grading policy you file with the Board.

A gate on resident contact

The 16 pre-contact classroom hours are tracked as their own requirement, and no student can be scheduled into a clinical rotation until they are done.

Clinical hours and skills checkoffs logged by the instructor

Instructors log each clinical shift by facility, so the 40 hours and the 20 in a licensed nursing home are counted separately. Skills are checked off against your clinical skills checklist by the supervising instructor, and scheduling holds groups to 15 students per instructor.

Completion documents on a 10-day clock

Finishing the program queues the certificate with the program name, total hours and director signature, and the queue shows how many of the 10 days are left.

The path to Board of Nursing approval

  1. 1

Private schools get licensed by the Department of Education, Commission for Independent Education, under s. 464.201(1)(a), F.S. Nursing homes provide proof of licensure under s. 400.141, F.S.

  2. 2

Sign written agreements with each clinical facility, including a licensed nursing home for the 20 long term care hours.

  3. 3

Submit the New Nursing Assistant Training Program Application, Form DH-MQA 1256, with the governing body, policies, staff, clinical facilities and a curriculum showing classroom, lab and clinical hours, teaching methodology, the skills checklist, a sample certificate and a calendar.

  4. 4

Board staff review it within 30 days, and the Board approves or denies within 90 days of a complete application under s. 120.60, F.S.

  5. 5

Enroll no one before approval, since approval is not retroactive. Renew every two years on Form DH-MQA 1257 within 60 days before December 31 of each even-numbered year.

Questions schools ask

Can Florida CNA training be done online?

The classroom part can. Rule 64B9-15.005(1) names online training programs, and the 40 clinical hours stay in person under the direct supervision of the instructor, 20 of them in a licensed nursing home. The rule allowed simulation for those long term care hours only in the 2021 and 2022 calendar years.

Can the online classroom be self-paced video?

Rule 64B9-15 does not spell out an asynchronous format, and it requires the instructor to provide direct supervision in the classroom. That is why we build around live, instructor-led sessions. Ask the Board office before planning a self-paced version.

What happens if my graduates fail the CNA exam?

Under 64B9-15.005(6), a pass rate more than 10% below the state average for 12 months leads to Board review and probation. A program with no test takers for two consecutive calendar years is considered abandoned.

How long does a Florida CNA program approval last?

Approval runs on a two-year cycle. Under 64B9-15.007, the renewal application goes in within 60 days before December 31 of each even-numbered year, and missing it rescinds approval.

Who owns the platform and what does it cost?

One flat fee per course, final payment when the Board of Nursing approves the program, no per-student fees, and you own the platform and code outright. We are building one right now for a state-approved online school in Virginia, in English and Spanish, on the same terms.
